New mental health unit opens at Maitland hospital
Mental health services will be bolstered in the Lower Hunter today with the opening of a $2 million refurbished unit at Maitland Hospital.
The upgrades include a family and carers meeting room, a reception area, and new staff offices to ensure greater privacy for patients.
Mental Health Minister Kevin Humphries will officially open the refurbished 24-bed unit this morning.
Maitland MP Robyn Parker says the original facility was built 13 years ago and was overdue for an upgrade.
“The 24-hour bed mental health unit at Maitland Hospital provides short-term care and treatment for people who are experiencing acute episodes of mental illness,” she said.
“A $2 million upgrade really has made the facilities much better for patients.
“There’s a room for families to talk to them, and it’s also better for staff, it’s a fantastic outcome.
“Today sees the completion of a commitment to refurbish the mental health unit at Maitland hospital.”
