An Australian woman is fighting for her life after being found with horrific injuries after a mystery incident in Bali.

Rebecca Ode was found on the tourist island of Nusa Lembongan island earlier this week after what appears to be a “tragic accident”.

The 36-year-old Newcastle woman was rushed to Denpasar’s Ngoerah General Hospital where she was treated for a brain haemorrhage, shattered eye socket, cheekbones and collarbone.

She had 14 hours of surgery to stem the bleeding in her brain and to save her eye.

Ode’s family back in Australia learned of the incident through a phone call early on Tuesday.

“‘I’m a friend of Becky’s in Bali, she’s been in a tragic accident’,” her brother-in-law Jesse Wilton said he was told.

“I said ‘Give it to me straight, how bad is it?

“‘It is bad’.”

Wilton told the ABC that Ode’s injuries were so severe, her face was likely to be permanently changed.

“She has lost an eye, fractured two cheekbones and a jaw and has surgery as well on her collarbone,” he said.

“She’s also got haemorrhaging in the brain and air pockets in the skull.”

Ode, who moved to Bali about six months ago after the death of her father, was transferred by boat from Nusa Lembongan to a specialist hospital in Denpasar.

Her mother and sister rushed to Bali to be by her beside. Back home, her family is trying to raise the expected $250,000 it will cost to fly her back to Australia.

Ode’s family still doesn’t know how she was injured, but suspect she may have been a victim of a hit and run.

“She is such a beautiful girl and deserves everything,” her sister Jordyn Ode said.

Wilton has started a GoFundMe page to help the family cover Ode’s medical bills, also bring her back to Australia.

“The main outcome is to get her out of Bali and get her into Aussie care,” he said.

“[We are looking at] $140,000 for a Medivac and close to $70,000 in hospital bills since Monday.

“We are bracing for a quarter of a million dollars just to get her home.”

The page had raised just over $137,000 by Friday morning.

Wilton said Ode’s insurance coverage was unclear but was being investigated.

“It will be one step at a time, but an expensive journey, if we all pull together we can make a big difference,” he said.
