Lone winner scoops $50m Powerball prize
A young Canberra man had a sleepless Thursday night after realising he had become one of Australia’s biggest lottery winners, scooping the lone division one prize in the $50 million Powerball draw.
The man, aged in his 30s, said he was dumbfounded at the win and “can’t get the smile of my face”.
He was contacted by lottery officials on Friday, but already knew he had won.
“I haven’t slept a wink,” the man said.
As for what he intends to do with his new fortune, he planned to first let the enormity of his win to sink in.
“I’m dumb-founded. I can’t get the smile off my face,” he said.
His win is the second largest by an individual entry in 2018.
But it falls short of the largest Powerball win claimed by a single entry in Australia. That was set in 2016, when one ticket bought in Hervey Bay won $70 million.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought his entry online. He is now the online reseller’s largest prize-winner.
The winning numbers in Powerball’s $50 million draw on Thursday were 34, 30, 14, 32, 22, 24 and 23. The all-important Powerball number was 9.
Powerball will offer a $3 million division one prize in next week’s draw.
