Sam Dastyari’s far-right attackers face legal action over name

The right-wing nationalists who attacked Labor Senator Sam Dastyari in an ugly racial confrontation this week are facing legal action from two entertainment companies over the group’s name.
Streaming service Stan and movie company Roadshow Productions will launch action against the men, including convicted stalker and racial vilifier Neil Erikson, who set up Facebook groups under the Patriot Blue name.
Patriot Blue is also the name of a white supremacist group in the entertainment companies’ upcoming fictional drama series Romper Stomper, based on the 1992 Australian film starring Russell Crowe.
“The group involved have misappropriated the name of the fictional group from the series,” Stan and Roadshow said in a joint statement.
“Stan and Roadshow Productions today instructed law firm Gilbert and Tobin to take appropriate legal action in relation to the infringement of the Patriot Blue trademark, and use of the Stan name on Facebook.”
In the movie Romper Stomper, Crowe portrayed the leader of a skinhead gang that attacked Asian immigrants in Melbourne.
Iranian-born Senator Dastyari was called a “terrorist” and “little monkey” by Patriot Blue members while ordering drinks at Melbourne bar Vu.
Thee New South Wales senator on Thursday said politics in Australia was heading to a “very, very ugly place” and attacks like the one he was subjected to “makes me feel small, makes me feel horrible, it makes you feel kind of terrible and that’s what they are designed to do”.
He is also considering legal action under Australia’s racial vilification laws.
While most of Dastyari’s parliamentary colleagues came to the Senator’s support on Thursday, long-time adversary Pauline Hanson labeled him a “smart arse”.
Senator Dastyari said people like Senator Hanson had empowered white nationalists and the radical right to take extreme positions. But the One Nation leader dismissed his comments.
“What a joke. He’s nothing but a pipsqueak,” she told reporters on the campaign trail in Queensland.
“He’s played up this whole thing. I’ve got absolutely no time for him whatsoever.”
Patriot Blue member Mr Erikson, who filmed the exchange and posted the footage on Facebook, defended his actions.
“Sam’s a strong bloke, he’s got a thick skin, he’s been in politics for a long time,” Mr Erikson told ABC radio on Thursday.
“He called us rednecks, which is a racist term in fact, so look, he gives as good as he gets.
“I think he’s playing the victim a little bit.”
