CCTV footage seized in Cassandra Sainsbury drug case

Colombian police are reviewing CCTV footage of a man seen at the hotel where accused Australian drug mule Cassandra Sainsbury was staying, as her family prepares to visit her in prison.

Today marks exactly one month since the 22-year-old Adelaide woman was arrested at El Dorado International Airport, where she was allegedly carrying 5.8 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside 18 headphone boxes in her suitcase.

Police believe the man, captured on CCTV footage at Ms Sainsbury’s hotel, may hold information relevant to their investigation into the case.

Ms Sainsbury’s family left Adelaide on Wednesday morning bound for Bogota and the Nine Network reports local police have reportedly seized the security vision believing the man could hold vital keys to their investigation.

Coming to terms with prison life

The family visit comes as the first video of Ms Sainsbury in her Colombian prison was released Wednesday, showing the woman in seemingly brighter spirits than initially described by prison sources shortly after her detainment.

In footage acquired by various Australian media outlets, Ms Sainsbury can be seen smiling and laughing, appearing to be relatively relaxed, confirming reports that she is coming to terms with her new life in prison.

She has been filmed talking to other inmates and waving at the cameras from the balcony outside her prison cell.

A fellow prisoner reportedly held up a sign in Spanish — “Cassandra Pide Libertad Immediata” — translating to: “Cassandra asks for immediate freedom”.

Her plea for help follows reports that her mother and sister have signed a lucrative deal with Channel Nine which is expected to fund a much-desired trip to Colombia to visit the accused in exchange for exclusive sit-down interviews for current affairs programme 60 Minutes.
