Australian Islamic State fighter Khaled Sharrouf has become the first dual national to be stripped of their citizenship under the Federal Government’s anti-terror laws.
National security sources confirmed to the ABC the Australian terrorist’s citizenship had been cancelled.
Sharrouf was jailed in 2009 for his involvement in the biggest terrorism plot in Australian history.
In 2013, he slipped out of Australia, travelling on his brother’s passport, headed to Syria and shot to global infamy when a photo was published of his seven-year-old son holding a severed head.
A spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton confirmed a person involved in overseas terrorism had had their citizenship cancelled, but would not confirm that person was Sharrouf.
It is the first time the Government’s anti-terror laws, which allow for dual nationals to lose their citizenship, have been used.
