How Peter Dutton was taken down in a Twitter battle

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has been comprehensively beaten on Twitter after asking followers to retweet his post “to support” his attack on the Opposition’s record on asylum seekers.
Instead of “support”, the response he got was a lesson in how to trump a federal politician on the internet.
The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection tweeted a picture of Labor MP Tanya Plibersek on SkyNews, who was arguing her party has better asylum seeker policy.
• Abbott government ‘doesn’t care about young people’
• Joe Hockey finally has a win
• Shoe-throw puts Dutton in curious company
Does anyone believe her? ALP = 50k ppl on 821 boats & >1200 people drowned. We have stopped boats. RT to support govt pic.twitter.com/FlMV8xVVj2

Almost as quick as Dutton’s rebuttal of Plibersek went live, we saw just how easy it is to cut down a government minister online.
While Dutton got 126 retweets from his more than 14,000 followers, two tweets attacking the minister blew him out of the water, attracting a lot more attention from Twitter users.
Here’s how it happened:
.@PeterDutton_MP Has the Australian government paid money to people smugglers? FAV for No. RT for Yes.

Dear @PeterDutton_MP, I bet this tweet calling you a gutless human rights abusing dirtbag gets more rt’s than yours. Game on. Love, Gilfer — Shinwah Lollyflap (@gilfer) June 15, 2015
