Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews looks destined to be Victoria’s next premier, according to the latest opinion poll.

A Herald Sun/Galaxy opinion poll shows Labor holding a two-party preferred lead of 52-48 per cent over the coalition ahead of the November 29 ballot.

The poll has Labor’s primary vote on 38 per cent, while the coalition is on 40 per cent, down 4.8 per cent from its 2010 election result.

The Greens vote has risen by one per cent since August to 13 per cent.

But there’s some good news for the coalition government, with Denis Napthine opening up a 16-point lead over Mr Andrews as preferred premier.

During the Labor campaign launch in Geelong on Sunday, Mr Andrews unveiled the centrepiece of the Opposition’s plan for the state – a $1.3 billion package to improve the state’s education system.

Schools, TAFEs and kindergartens are all set to benefit from the plan, which will also fund a free breakfast program at schools with children from low-income families.

Provisions have been made to provide some students with access to free eye tests, uniforms and shoes.

Mr Andrews invoked the legacy of the late Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam when launching his party’s election campaign, saying: “Gough Whitlam built our TAFE system and I refuse to sit back and watch it die.”
