Twitter debate of the day: Josh Thomas v Wyatt Roy

Actor Josh Thomas is on a roll. On ABC television recently he had a heated debate with MP Bob Katter and homosexuality and mental health, with many viewers claiming Thomas prevailed.
Then his new show Please Like Me was nominated for an international comedy Emmy. And on Wednesday, he became embroiled in a fight with Liberal MP Wyatt Roy on Twitter over the government’s asylum seeker policy.
It appears the comedian has got the better of his second parliamentarian in a little over two weeks, with Mr Roy resorting to personal insults when the debate became heated.
It all started with a tweet from Mr Roy which included a link through to his Labor-slamming speech in parliament.
Grab some popcorn. Here’s the discussion, tweet by tweet.
1100 deaths at sea,1400 children in detention.Our polices have saved lives– a fact lost on Labor members. http://t.co/l6wbTtyXbA @ALeighMP

.@Wyatt_MP You’re being a twerp.
— Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
.@Wyatt_MP If the goal of being cruel to asylum seekers is to deter people from getting on boats then why the secrecy?
— Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
.@Wyatt_MP And why not be crueler? We are a great, rich nation. Kick them in the balls, film it and put it on YouTube. — Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
It wasn’t long before Mr Roy joined the conversation:
@JoshThomas87 What is kind about ppl drowning & kids in detention? We can now take more of world’s most vulnerable http://t.co/OgUBh3K26K
— Wyatt Roy MP (@Wyatt_MP) October 22, 2014
But Thomas fired back with reference to the accusations of sex abuse in detention centres:
@Wyatt_MP Our government didn’t actually rape kids, did it?http://t.co/BigkE6CyJf — Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
And a reminder of Australia’s current foreign aid policy:
@Wyatt_MP Remember when you guys cut foreign aid? Remember when you spent $1b a year on detention centers? You aren’t nice guys/girl.
— Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
Mr Roy wasn’t going to back down.
@JoshThomas87 really? Is this where you are going with this conversation. No wonder you have to ask ppl to like you. http://t.co/OgUBh3K26K — Wyatt Roy MP (@Wyatt_MP) October 22, 2014
@JoshThomas87 In 07 only 4 ppl in detention, no children. 2013 1400 children in detention.Reduced that # by over 516 http://t.co/OgUBh3K26K
— Wyatt Roy MP (@Wyatt_MP) October 22, 2014
@JoshThomas87 is this part of your routine? I wouldn’t open with that in any company http://t.co/OgUBh3K26K — Wyatt Roy MP (@Wyatt_MP) October 22, 2014
Thomas didn’t see the funny side.
@Wyatt_MP No, it wasn’t a joke.
— Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
And he still had more evidence to cruelty, asking Mr Roy about the safety of gay asylum seekers in countries where homosexuality is illegal.
@Wyatt_MP Hey what’s gonna happen with the gay refugees being settle in Papua New Guinea? (Where it’s illegal to be gay) — Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
While Mr Roy restated his argument.
@JoshThomas87 More than 516 fewer children in detention compared to when we came to office. http://t.co/e4lmK0UKMQ http://t.co/OgUBh3K26K
— Wyatt Roy MP (@Wyatt_MP) October 22, 2014
Thomas continued to ask him about the claims of sexual abuse.
@Wyatt_MP Are you telling me you couldn’t have done that without raping some? http://t.co/BigkE6CyJf — Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
Before trying to drag Scott Morrison into the conversation.
@Wyatt_MP Also, there are less because loads were sent back to danger. It’s not good having @ScottMorrisonMP as your legal guardian.
— Josh Thomas (@JoshThomas87) October 22, 2014
Mr Morrison avoided the bait.
