A man has been found dead in a Melbourne park, his body burned and a can of accelerant nearby.

He was found by a passer-by on a grass embankment near a train line in Alma Park East at St Kilda about 6.30am on Monday, police say.

He has yet to be formally identified.

Trains on the Sandringham line have been suspended between South Yarra and Elsternwick at the request of police.
