Student Pyne opposed uni fees

Education Minister Christopher Pyne once pledged as a young university student to end any government movement to introduce university fees, according a report by The Australian.

The Coalition frontbencher, who himself raised university fees this year, campaigned in 1985 as a student of the University of Adelaide to “do everything possible” to keep tertiary education free.

“I feel it my duty to stand for election and do everything possible to forestall the introduction of fees and indeed to end any movement by the federal government to introduce fees,” Mr Pyne said.

PUP rejects university changes

The statement appeared in the university’s student newspaper Oh Dit! before Mr Pyne later served as president of the university’s Liberal Club.
