Journalist in hospital for surgery

One of the three Al Jazeera journalists imprisoned in Egypt, Mohamed Fahmy, has been admitted to hospital.

The dual Canadian-Egyptian national is to have surgery on his arm for an injury he sustained before his arrest in December.

His supporters say the injury has been exacerbated by harsh prison conditions.

Fahmy and his colleagues, Baher Mohamed and Australian Peter Greste, were found guilty of spreading false news and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood last month.

Fahmy and Greste were sentenced to seven years in jail and Mohamed was sentenced to 10 years. Three other journalists who were tried in absentia were also given 10-year sentences.

Their jailing has been met with widespread outrage, with journalists around the world protesting their imprisonment.

Al Jazeera English managing director Al Anstey said after the trial that the verdict “defies logic, sense, and any semblance of justice”.

The three journalists have already spent more than six months in an Egyptian prison.
