A golden retriever has had surgery after eating meat baited with a fish hook at a Melbourne park.

The dog underwent surgery to remove a hook from its digestive tract after it found and ate several pieces of meat, each concealing a fish hook, at a park in Newport on Saturday morning.

Police are investigating and have increased patrols around Lakeside Reserve and the Hobsons Bay council has erected signs warning of the incident.
