Matildas star Mary Fowler says she was left “speechless” when seeing herself as a Barbie doll for the first time.

The Australian attacker was one of nine international athletes honoured with a mini version of themselves in celebration of Barbie’s 65th anniversary.

The doll replicates a moment in Fowler’s life when she felt “really strong and confident in myself”.

“And that moment for me was during the World Cup last year,” the Manchester City forward said.

Fowler was a pivotal part of the Australian women team’s historic campaign in which stadiums sold out as the Matildas finished fourth in the FIFA tournament.

The doll wears a pink shirt-and-shorts combination and has its long dark hair pulled back in a high bubble ponytail.

On its hands are a pair of Fowler’s signature black gloves.

“All the little details were stuff that I thought of during that time, and the boots are so accurate to how they look in real life,” Fowler said in a statement.

“When I saw myself as Barbie for the first time, it was crazy.

“I was honestly just a bit speechless because I never would have thought that I’d have a Barbie that looks just like me.

“I think there’s so many other incredible women that have been made as Barbies, and I just never would have thought that I’d be up there with them. I’m just super grateful and honoured to be part of this.”

Fowler collaborated with doll maker Mattel on the final design.

“Super grateful for the opportunity to capture and share a version of myself when I feel my strongest, and most confident,” she posted on Instagram.

“To finally see and hold my Barbie with its bubble braid, gloves, and boots, in a look that many young girls recreate is so special.”

Other athletes that now appear as Barbie dolls are tennis great Venus Williams and French boxer Estelle Mossely.

“Barbie is bringing together these inspiring stories that are shaping the future to show girls that anything is possible if you relentlessly pursue your passions,” Mattel said.

Williams said her career had been driven by “shattering glass ceilings and staying true to myself”.

“Barbie’s mission couldn’t resonate more deeply with that ethos.

“I’m honoured to be recognised as a sports role model and join forces with Team Barbie to continue empowering the next generation of young girls to never stop believing in their dreams.”
