The white humpback having a whale of a time in waters off Australia’s east coast is the famous Migaloo.
Queensland rangers have confirmed the identity of the white whale following confusion over whether it was indeed Migaloo or a marine creature commonly referred to as “Son of Migaloo”.
The rangers were on a Marine Parks vessel which escorted the whale in waters off Moreton Island on Wednesday.
They initially thought it was too small to be Migaloo but confirmed it was after comparing photos they had taken with ones from 2003.
Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles has warned boaties and pilots not to get too close to Migaloo following reports of helicopters, charter boats, research boats and drones pursuing the famed creature making its annual migration north.
The maximum penalty for intentionally moving too close to a whale is $20,113.50 or an on the spot fine of $609.
