Purr-fect timing for tiger cub born at Dreamworld

A tiger has been born at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, with the head keeper hailing the birth – the first of its kind in seven years at the theme park – as a win for conservation.

The male cub was born in the early hours of Saturday morning and weighed in at 1.3 kilograms.

The yet-to-be named cub is the offspring of eight-year-old Nikka and 11-year-old Raja.

Tiger Island manager Patrick Martin-Vegue said both mother and cub were doing well.

The team has been coaxing Nikka to leave the pen so the cub can be weighed and checked.

“I have given him a cuddle each day,” Mr Martin-Vegue said.

“This reinforces our program and gets us to talk about tiger conservation, as tigers are fairing very poorly in the wild.

“This cub right here, he will be a big part of fundraising and a big part of raising awareness as well.”

Dreamworld funds a number of tiger conservation projects.

The birth announcement has been made on Global Tiger Day with celebrations scheduled for this weekend.
