The alleged gunman behind a terrifying Sunday night shooting spree in inner-Sydney is “speaking freely” with police.

The man, aged 60, was arrested after tactical officers stormed a unit above a shop on busy Georges River Road at Croydon Park.

It came after a near two-hour stand off in Sydney’s inner-west, where bystanders, cars and police were fired on up to 100 times.

Streets were closed and the area was locked down after reports of bullets being fired at traffic, including police cars, travelling along a busy local road.

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said on Monday about 50 shots were fired “indiscriminately” at passers-by.

A motive for the shooting is yet to be determined, with police ruling out terrorism or gang activity. Two rifles were seized from the unit after the 60-year-old’s arrest.

He was taken to Bankstown Hospital, after being injured during his arrest. On Monday afternoon, he was released from hospital and taken into custody at Burwood Police Station.

NSW Police said earlier on Monday that footage from body-worn cameras showed how close some officers came to being hit as they took cover during the “serious and terrifying incident”.

“The police were actually outside their vehicle when they were first shot at. They’ve retreated tactically and safely,” Parry said.

“This person, who is now in custody, was firing indiscriminately at passing vehicles.”

But Parry said police were not the target of the attack.

He said the man had no recorded mental health history with police. There had been “very few recorded interactions” with officers in the past 20 years.

The man has children, and police have spoken to his family. The Nine papers are reporting he is a customer services officer with Sydney Trains.

“The alleged offender has been speaking freely with police, whether that’s co-operation or not. But he hasn’t not commented at this stage,” Parry said.

A man in his 50s, who was a passenger in one of the passing vehicles, was critically injured. He has had emergency surgery for gunshot wounds to his neck and chest.

More than a dozen others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. They included injuries from flying glass when windows were shot out.

Parry said a full examination of the scene would determine how many bullets were fired.

“A long arm, high-calibre rifle has been seized from the scene. At this stage, there are a number of vehicles, a number of premises, which have seen sustained gunshot damage,” he said.

“He was shooting … from within the premises, out of a window. [That] is what we believe.”

He said it was “incredible that nobody has died or received significant injuries”.

The carnage from Sunday’s shooting incident was clearly visible on Monday, with broken glass scattered around the small shopping strip that was peppered with bullets.

Police, including forensic and rescue officers wearing white and navy jumpsuits, remained at the scene scouring the area for clues.

A handful of locals milled around as residents assessed the damage. Neighbour Marco De Marcellis said he had settled in to watch the NRL grand final when the shooting spree began.

“I wasn’t expecting gunshots, you don’t expect that in Australia,” he said.

“That’s the beautiful thing about living here. It’s why everyone wants to live here.”

As the shooting incident played out, neighbours who had seen police swarm the area warned De Marcellis to stay inside.

New NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said it was a “serious and terrifying incident”, but there was “no known link” to terrorism or gang activity.

“I’ve seen body worn footage where police were forced to take cover while trying to assist members of the public,” he told Sydney radio 2GB on Monday.

“To show that sort of bravery, to put their lives in danger to assist members of the public is probably the greatest honour we can do as police officers.”
