A Queensland father has been charged with murdering his wife after her remains were uncovered in the ashes of a horror house fire.

Cameron Hunt, 45, was charged with one count each of murder domestic violence offence and arson.

The blaze erupted in Geham, a rural area near Toowoomba west of Brisbane, about 2.50am on Tuesday morning.

The property was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

“Once the fire was able to be extinguished, an initial examination of the scene located the body of one deceased person,” Queensland Police said.

They allege Hunt deliberately lit the fire that killed Louise Hunt, the mother of his two children.

He allegedly fled the scene, before being found about 200 kilometres away in Redcliffe.

Police established Operation X-Ray Geo involving detectives from the Toowoomba Criminal Investigation Branch and the Homicide Investigation Unit.

Hunt is expected to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday (April 16).

Detective Superintendent George Marchesini told The Courier Mail  it was a “terrible situation”.

“It’s a terrible situation when you have an incident like this. It is still early stages of the investigation and obviously early stages of doing any thorough examination,” he said.

“As you can appreciate further scientific and forensic examination needs to occur.”
