A 46-year-old woman has had her case mentioned in a Queensland court after being charged with the murder of her daughter.

Yingying Xu did not appear in court when the case of the death of her 10-year-old daughter Sophie Wang was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

She was remanded in custody.

A police application to suppress names and details in the case was later withdrawn after it was opposed by lawyers and media.

Xu was charged with murder after Sophie’s father discovered the 10-year-old lying unresponsive in their home in Carrara, on the Gold Coast, about 6pm on Tuesday.

He called triple-0 and emergency services arrived within minutes. They attempted to revive his daughter.

“Despite her father and emergency services’ best efforts, the young girl was pronounced deceased by attending paramedics,” Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis said on Wednesday.

“In my 15-year career as a detective, it’s one of the most confronting scenes that I have seen.

“It was an extremely distressing scene for not only the family member, the father, there but attending police – and I can understand the significant distress among the community.”

Xu was arrested about 10.25pm on Tuesday.

Ellis refused to give further details about the case, including responding to speculation about Xu’s mental health, the whereabouts of her vehicle or any weapons that might have been used.

Multiple media outlets have reported that the child’s throat was slashed.

“All aspects of the investigation are ongoing. As I said before, it’s a matter before the courts, so it would be inappropriate for me to make comment or speculate,” Ellis said multiple times in response to questions at Wednesday’s media briefing.

Earlier, Sophie’s school had released a statement saying her death had devastated its community.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of a tragic incident that occurred in a home within Emerald Lakes last night, resulting in the passing of one of our beloved students,” Emmanuel College Gold Coast principal Daniel Brown wrote in a letter to parents.

“We are devastated by this incident and know it will profoundly impact our school community.

“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the child, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”

Sophie was in grade five at the Carrara school.

Brown said counselling was being offered to students at Emmanuel College and its sister school Josiah College.
