Five police officers have been taken to hospital after a man died shortly after being arrested in central Victoria.

The 27-year-old became unwell and unresponsive shortly after being arrested at a property in Windridge Way, Kyneton, in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, on Tuesday afternoon, Victoria Police said.

Officers performed CPR and called for medical assistance but he could not be saved.

“At this early stage it appears the man may have ingested some sort of substance,” Victoria Police said.

Five officers who were in the house during the arrest were taken to hospital as a precaution.

No further information has been released about the substance or impact to officers.

Homicide squad detectives and police from the Professional Standards Command are probing what happened. Victoria Police said that was standard practice when a person dies in custody.
