Outspoken Labor backbencher Ed Husic suffered fractures and a concussion in a serious car crash on a major Sydney motorway.

The accident occurred as the Chifley MP was driving home from his western Sydney electorate office on Tuesday, with paramedics reporting that his car was rear-ended by a truck going around 80km/h on the M7.

Photos show extensive damage to the right-hand side of Husic’s vehicle, reportedly a Tesla in which he was the sole occupant.

Husic was taken to hospital with minor abrasions, fractures and a concussion, according to a post on his Instagram account that described the accident as “serious”.

“Mr Husic was extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury,” it said.

The statement thanked staff at Westmead Hospital for their “outstanding care”, saying he was discharged on Wednesday.

Husic added that on doctors’ advice, he would take “a short period of leave” from parliamentary duties to fully recover.

“Mr Husic was not at fault in the accident and is providing a statement to police,” it said.

Federal parliament is set to resume on Tuesday after a month-long winter break.

In July, Husic used an appearance at Labor’s national conference to push for stronger criticism of Israel in the party’s platform, but the motion was quashed by factional leaders.

At the time, he said he would remain in the party but urged fellow members to maintain pressure over Labor’s platform.

“I’ve seen some of the big debates and big issues of the time being discussed on the floor of the conference,” he said after his amendment was quashed.

“I have been surprised at the extraordinary amount of energy that has been applied to stop this, as opposed to talking about this.”

The MP was a minister in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s first term, but was scrapped from the frontbench shortly after the 2025 election in a factional deal.
