Queensland Police have confirmed that human remains found at a national park are those of missing teenager Pheobe Bishop.
A major police search was launched after 17-year-old Pheobe went missing on May 15, when she failed to board a flight from Bundaberg airport to Western Australia to see her boyfriend.
Her two housemates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Kristan Bromley, 33, were later arrested and charged with one count each of murder and two counts each of interfering with a corpse.
Police discovered human remains on June 6 during a search near Good Night Scrub National Park, about 40 kilometres from Gin Gin, where Phoebe had been living before her disappearance, and 90 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg.
On Tuesday, they released a statement confirming the remains belonged to the missing teen.
“Investigations into locating more items of interest in relation to this matter remain ongoing,” it said.
“Officers continue to appeal for any information in relation to Pheobe Bishop or the movement of a grey Hyundai IX35 between May 15 to 18 in the greater Gin Gin area.”
Police allege Wood and Bromley drove Phoebe close to the airport in a grey Hyundai but no one exited the car. They allege the 17-year-old was murdered and her body moved more than once.
Wood and Bromley are in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance on August 11.
Hundreds of local residents, as well as police officers and SES crew, attended a community vigil in Gin Gin on June 8 for Pheobe. Loved ones remembered her as fiercely protective and gentle to those who were hurting.
Phoebe’s mother, Kylie Johnson, spoke at the vigil and said her daughter lived life to the fullest.
“Pheobe always sung her own tune,” she said. “She loved the people that she loved to every extent of the earth.”
The family has backed a fundraiser launched in Phoebe’s name to support local volunteer groups. Johnson paid tribute on her Facebook page to those who worked tirelessly to “bring our baby home to us”.
