Foxtel’s boss Patrick Delany has sent an apologetic email to staff after an image surfaced of him performing a Nazi salute “over a decade ago” — as new footage revealed more about the context of the act.

The picture of Delany with two fingers under his nose and the other arm raised in salute was published by Crikey on Sunday, sparking outcry.

Delany told the publication the image may have been taken while he was “demonstrating the similarity” between the offensive gesture and a gesture used by A-League fans, while on set at Fox Sports.

He apologised unreservedly in a statement provided to Crikey and said he was “shocked” to see the image.

On Tuesday, Crikey reported that Delany had also sent an apologetic all-staff email on Sunday night.

The apology reiterated his public remarks condemning his own behaviour.

“I am very sorry for my actions and sincerely apologise to people who have been hurt or offended, especially members of the Jewish community,” he wrote.

“Since becoming aware of this photo I have been searching my mind for a circumstance from over a decade ago where a photo capturing me in this pose could ever be possible.

“The picture is completely inconsistent with my values and beliefs, and family connections.”

However, new footage emerged on Tuesday afternoon that appears to show the context in which Delany performed the infamous Seig Heil.

Brisbane Times posted video of Delany with former Socceroos player Mark Bosnich on the set of Fox Sports’ Hyundai A-League.

The newspaper reports that in what appears to be an off-air recording, Bosnich is demonstrating the studio’s new virtual soccer ball, and asks Delany to try and kick it.

“We’ll do it like you would’ve done, mate. You ready?” Delany says, placing two fingers under his nose in reference to Adolf Hitler’s moustache, raising his arm and kicking the ball.

Brisbane Times reports the gesture appears to be in reference to a similar move Bosnich made while playing in the English Premier League in 1996.

Delany repeated his apology to the publication.

“As I said earlier this week, it is difficult to recall events from ten years ago. The events you describe could be the case, but the additional context does not take away from the hurt I have caused, or the sincerity of my apologies,” he said.

The original picture drew criticism from Jewish and multicultural groups and on Monday Delany met NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip, reports Crikey.

Ossip told Nine newspapers they accepted the Foxtel boss’s apology and “recognise his and [News Corp chair] Lachlan Murdoch’s strong and unequivocal repudiation of antisemitism in the past 10 months.

“Patrick made clear that, regardless of the context in which the salute was performed, he understood the offence and hurt that the gesture causes Jewish Australians and the many Australians whose family members were killed or injured fighting the Nazis during World War II.”
