Honeymoon over for Albanese as gap narrows in latest Newspoll

The gap between Labor and the Coalition has narrowed in the latest Newspoll, with the margin reduced to 52-48.

The exclusive online survey of 1220 voters for The Australian newspaper, which was released on Sunday night, revealed that the Coalition was leading the ALP on primary vote (37 per cent to 35 per cent), and that the two-party preferred contest between the major parties was now at its closest since the May 2022 election.

Support for the Greens was unchanged at 12 per cent, but minor parties and independents fell a point to 10 per cent.

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party remained steady on 6 per cent.

It is the first major poll conducted since the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum received a resounding No vote on October 14, and comes amid fears of another interest rate hike, the cost-of-living crisis and the Hamas/Israel conflict.

Despite a two-point lift in the Coalition vote and a one-point fall for the government, the result shows Labor’s vote still remained above the 32.6 per cent it recorded in its election win.

If an election was held today the Newspoll result means Labor would be on track to repeat its victory with no net loss or gain of seats.

Preferred PM

On a personal level, the Prime Minister’s personal approval ratings slumped to their lowest level since his time in opposition, falling five points as preferred Prime Minister to 46 per cent.

It is a far cry from the 25-point lead in July, but Albanese still retains a 10-point lead over Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

Analysing the results, noted psephologist Kevin Bonham tweeted that “the Albanese government’s polling honeymoon is now quite clearly over”.

‘‘Been probably just below honeymoon territory for a couple of months now but with tonight’s Newspoll and a few other indifferent numbers lately the Albanese Government’s polling honeymoon is now quite clearly over,’’ Bonham tweeted.

‘‘Been a good run, nearly a year and a half, 2nd or arguably 3rd longest on record. (Rudd longest at just over 2 years). Nothing lasts forever.’’

Albanese, who is in China following an official visit to Washington, has spent a significant part of the past three weeks out of the country.
