Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage has surprised a grocery store owner in regional WA as he browsed the aisles for Asian goods.

Cage recently landed in Australia and is believed to be filming his latest movie, The Surfer, in the popular tourist region of Busselton.

The Oscar-winning star was spotted out and about at a local supermarket with wife Riko Shibata.

He also triggered excitement at Food of Asia in Busselton when he was recognised while selecting ingredients for purchase.

Shop owner Annie Liban told the ABC she thought the tall sunglass-wearing man at her counter looked familiar.

“I said, ‘Oh he looks like Nicolas Cage,’ but I was like, ‘What’s he doing in this store,'” she told the ABC.

“Why is he getting some eggs and some kimchi? We couldn’t stop staring.”

She said staff eventually worked up the courage to ask who he was.

“There were some clues … he was wearing boots in hot weather and a jacket, wearing some Prada sunglasses and the voice as well,” she said.

“And then when he picked up the oranges in front of the shop we said to him, ‘We only accept cash,’ and he said, ‘I only have US dollars.’

“We said, ‘Oh you do look like Nicolas Cage’ and he said, ‘I am.'”

Filming is said to be taking place in the Margaret River and Yallingup regions.

Movie website imdb writes that The Surfer tells the story of a man returning from the US to his beachside hometown in Australia.

A local gang of surfers humiliate him in front of his teenage son as they claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood.

Local students from Margaret River Senior High School have been cast in the psychological thriller.

A casting callout earlier this year sought confident kids “with a bit of attitude” to ride their BMXs delivering beer and “generally causing trouble around town.”
