Mazda has issued an urgent recall affecting nearly 180,000 Australian vehicles for a potentially fatal defect affecting the rear-view camera.

The alert affects owners of the popular Mazda3 (BM,BN) and CX-3 (DK) models, built between 2013 and 2020.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear-view camera wiring harness may become damaged and could cause the rear-view image to become distorted or flicker,” warns the company.

“If the rear-view camera display does not clearly display the rear-view image as intended, it could increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to any persons located behind the vehicle.”

It follows the recall of 19,000 Ford Mustangs vehicles in July with a similar problem.

Ford said the Mustang defect was in the wiring harness of the rear boot lid.

That fault could cause intermittent operation of the rear-view camera, loss of satellite radio reception, inoperative luggage compartment lamp and/or inoperable luggage compartment release — which also could lead to injury or death.

The Ford recall affected Mustangs manufactured from 2014 to 2017.
