A bullet has been fired through the window of Macquarie Fields Public School in Sydney’s southwest.

No students or teachers were injured in the incident which occurred about 12.45pm on Tuesday, NSW Police said.

The classroom was occupied by year one and two students, with police describing the incident as reckless but not targeted.

The small calibre bullet broke a window and was stopped by a blind, according to police.

“Early investigations reveal the projectile may have come from some distance away,” said Campbelltown area commander Detective Superintendent Grant Healey.

“It’s a totally reckless act by somebody who’s acting in a way, with a firearm, that’s very dangerous to the community.”

A crime scene was established and the bullet seized for forensic examination.

The school was not placed into lockdown at the time of the incident, police said.

Police called for any witnesses in the Macquarie Fields area at the time of the shooting to call Crime Stoppers.
