Guide to trading hours and public transport on Anzac Day

Australians gather across the country and overseas for Anzac Day

Know what shops will be open, how you can get around on public transport, and where you can pay your respects to the Diggers on Anzac Day.

What’s open?

Woolworths

  • NSW, VIC and ACT – Open from 1pm
  • QLD – All stores closed (except Brisbane Airport, which will open)
  • SA – Rundle Mall and regional stores open (Millicent and Adelaide metropolitan stores will be closed)
  • WA – Most stores will be closed
  • NT – All stores will open
  • TAS – All stores open from 12.30pm.

Coles

  • NSW, ACT and VIC – Stores will open from 1pm, but some may have reduced trading hours
  • QLD – All stores closed
  • NT – All stores open from 12pm, with reduced trading hours
  • TAS – All stores open from 12.30pm, with reduced trading hours
  • SA – Most stores closed except Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Berri, Port Augusta, Mount Barker, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor
  • WA – Most stores closed except several, including Orana, Albany, and Busselton Central.

Kmart

  • NSW – All stores open from 1.30pm with reduced trading hours
  • QLD and WA – All stores closed
  • NT and SA – Most stores to remain closed, although some will open from 1pm with reduced trading hours
  • VIC and TAS – All stores will open from 1pm with reduced trading hours.

Bunnings

  • SA – All stores open from 12pm
  • NT and VIC – All stores open from 1pm
  • WA – All stores will open from 12pm, except Armadale and Bunbury which will be closed
  • TAS – All stores will be open from 12.30pm
  • QLD – All stores will be closed
  • ACT – All stores will open from 1pm
  • All Bunnings trade centres will be closed.

Dan Murphy’s, BWS

  • Most Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores nationwide will open at either 1pm or 1.15pm and close between 6pm and 7pm. Check with your local store.

Liquorland

  • NSW, VIC and ACT – Most stores will open from 1pm but with reduced trading hours
  • QLD – Some stores will be closed all day, while others may open for limited trading after 1pm
  • NT – All stores will open after 12pm with reduced trading hours
  • SA and WA – Most stores will have limited trading hours and will open after 12pm.

Westfield

  • NSW –  Westfield Kotara, Tuggerah, Eastgardens, Hornsby, Liverpool, Mt Druitt, Penrith, and Warringah will open from 1pm to 5pm. Westfield Bondi Junction, Burwood, Chatswood, Hurstville, Miranda, and Parramatta will open from 1pm to 6pm. Westfield Sydney and Sydney Central Plaza will trade from 1pm to 7pm.
  • VIC – All centres will trade from 1pm to 5pm
  • QLD, SA and WA – All centres will be closed.

Public transport

Victoria: Free public transport for veterans and war widows to help them attend Anzac Day commemoration activities. Free travel is also extended to Australian Defence Force members, scouts, guides and school students on Anzac Day.

NSW: Free travel for veterans and their families on Anzac Day.

Queensland: Different timetables for some services for the Anzac Day public holiday.

Perth: Free travel on Anzac Day for veterans and serving personnel wearing uniforms, campaign ribbons, or medals. Seniors, aged and disability support pensioners can also travel for free on the public holiday.

Adelaide: Free travel on all Adelaide Metro buses, trains and trams for past and present military personnel wearing a uniform, people wearing service medals, and people carrying a war veteran’s identification card. Additional bus, train, and tram services will operate for the dawn service. Road closures will affect some bus routes and tram services. Seniors Card members can travel for free on Adelaide Metro buses, trains, and trams.

Tasmania: A normal public holiday timetable will operate.

Darwin: Veterans who hold a Veteran’s Gold Card are provided with free travel on public transport.
