Trump asked the same question 23 times

Getting straight answers out of presidential candidate Donald Trump is no easy feat.
Seasoned CNN anchor Jake Tapper learned this the hard way on Saturday when he attempted to question the Republican about hisĀ potentially racist criticisms of a federal judge.

In an interview with theĀ Wall Street Journal last week, Trump claimedĀ the judge overseeing a lawsuit against Trump University had a āconflict of interestā with the case because of his Mexican heritage.
The 69-year-old said Judge Gonzalo Curielās background and membership of the Latino lawyersā association meant he was a āTrump haterā given TrumpāsĀ plans to ābuild a wallā between the United States and Mexico, Trump claimed.
Curiel is presiding over civil fraud lawsuits against the University, in which the plaintiffs allege the University fooled them into paying tens of thousands of dollars on the basisĀ they would be taught Trumpās own real estate strategies.
āLet me ask you about comments you made about the judge in the Trump University case,ā Tapper saidĀ on his programĀ The Lead.
āYou said that you thought it was a conflict of interest that he was the judge because he is of Mexican heritage, even though he is from Indiana. Hillary Clinton said that that is a racist attack on a federal judge.ā
Trump responded by highlightingĀ Curielās refusal to dismiss the case despite Trumpās requests.
āWhat does that have to do with his heritage?ā TapperĀ asked.
The GOP candidateĀ then proceeded to avoid the questionĀ 23 times, instead choosing to focus on his plan to renegotiate trade with Mexico, his āunfair treatmentā at the hands of Curiel and Curielās āprideā in his heritage.
āI will tell you ⦠I have been treated very unfairly. Beforehand we had another judge. If that judge was still there this case would have been over two years ago.
āThis judge is of Mexican heritage, Iām building a wall.ā
A confused Tapper shot back: āSo a Mexican judgeĀ could ever be involved in a case that involves you?ā
āWell, heās a member of a society thatās very pro-Mexico and thatās fine ⦠I think he should recuse himself,ā Trump responded. āIām building a wall, Iām trying to keep business out of Mexico.ā
āBut heās an American,ā Tapper said of Curiel, who was born in the state of Indiana.
āHeās of Mexican heritage and heās very proud of it,ā Trump said, before adding that many people said his university was āfantasticā.
After nearly five minutes of deflection, Tapper finally got a straight answer out of Trump.
āIf you are saying he cannot do his job because of his race, is that not the definition of racism?ā he asked.
āNo, I donāt think so at all,ā Trump responded.Ā āWeāre building a wall, heās a Mexican. The answer is, he is giving us very unfair rulings, rulings that people canāt even believe.ā
The controversial candidate also used the interview as an opportunity to talk about his own election campaign, especially in relation to Hispanic voters.
āI think Iām going to do very well with Hispanics, you know why Iām going to do well with Hispanics? Because Iām going to bring back jobs and theyāre going to get jobs,ā he said.
