A Mildura man has been remanded in custody after facing court charged with the murder of a woman at Cardross, in northern Victoria, at the weekend.

Police said Osborn was arrested at the same home on Montana Ave where Belej lived.

He was charged last night and faced an out-of-sessions court hearing.

A detective told the hearing that during a police interview Osborn admitted to the murder.

He did not apply for bail at today’s hearing at the Mildura Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody until October.

Ms Belej worked at Mildura council and has been remembered by her colleagues as a dedicated employee.

In a statement, Mildura council chief executive officer Gerald Jose said there were “no words” to describe the organisation’s feelings about Ms Belej’s death.

“Her beautiful, bubbly personality and room-warming smile will always be remembered,” the statement said.

Ms Belej was known as a strong advocate against workplace violence who worked to have the council accredited as a White Ribbon workplace.
