Admit it, if Hollywood scriptwriters penned politicians’ speeches and slogans things would get pretty entertaining.

On Tuesday, the internet exploded when television buffs realised Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had started using a slogan previously coined in American comedy Veep.

You know, his line that spouted “continuity with change”, in response to another unwelcome intervention by former PM Tony Abbott?

“As I said earlier today there is continuity with change,” Mr Turnbull told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Tuesday morning.

Mr Turnbull used the phrase on Monday night too, during an interview with Leigh Sales on ABC’s 7.30 program.

“So, as you go from one Liberal Prime Minister to another, you have continuity and you have change and there has been a lot of change,” he said.

Both Minister for Employment Michaelia Cash and Minister for Finance Mathias Cormann also borrowed variations of the phrase when speaking to media.

But the comedy Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as US Vice-President Selina Meyer, used the slogan “continuity with change” during one of Ms Meyer’s election campaigns in an episode aired in 2015. 

It was an embarrassing coincidence for the PM, which many social media users had a lot of fun with.

Even one of Veep’s writer’s caught wind of Mr Turnbull’s “new” slogan:

So we decided to match other Australian politicians to quotes from famous television and movie characters, the same way Mr Turnbull did with Veep‘s slogan.

Because we’ve all wondered how Tony Soprano’s (The Sopranos) morbid humour and Bronwyn Bishop’s unwillingness to retire could collide in a quote.

Oh and don’t fret – we didn’t forget Tony Abbott either.

US President Josiah Bartlett (The West Wing) might be the political opposite of the former Prime Minister, but Martin Sheen’s character did say something very ‘Abbott-esque’ during the show.
