A gold medal won at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne has been stolen during a break-in at a home in the city’s north-west.

The medal, which was won by the Indian men’s table tennis team, was taken from the property on Maribyrnong Road, Moonee Ponds, on January 12.

Jewellery, watches and other electronic goods were also taken, police said.

• Victorian shop owner bludgeoned, burnt
• Human remains linked to underworld figure
• Man charged with Karen Chetcuti murder

Detective Acting Sergeant Daniel Jacuta said the medal was worthless but had sentimental value for the owner.

“For someone to steal the medal when it means nothing to them is heartless,” he said in a statement.

“The bloke it belongs to trained long and hard to compete and win the medal and for it to be stolen is devastating for him.”

Police asked anyone with information to contact them or phone CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
