An Australian mercenary has been reportedly killed in clashes in Yemen, alongside six Colombian troops.

Initial media reports have named the Australian commander as Philip Stitman or Streetman.

It is believed that he was employed as a foreign mercenary by the United Arab Emirates to lead Colombian troops against the Houthis and allied army units in the country’s south.

In March, rebel group the Houthis took control of parts of Yemen and forced the government into exile, accusing it of corruption.

In July, government allies aided by Saudi Arabia-led coalition regained control of the city of Aden.

On Monday, Aden’s governor was killed by a car bomb. Terrorist group Islamic State took responsibility for the killing.

The UN says airstrikes in Yemen have killed almost 6000 people since March this year.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment by The New Daily, but is yet to confirm the death.
