Police investigating a baby’s death at family day care in Moorooka on Brisbane’s south side have said some children were locked in rooms.

The five-month-old boy could not be revived by paramedics at the Wallace Street house.

Police said initial investigations suggest the death was not suspicious, but officers would look into how children were being cared for at the house.

Inspector Steve Flori told Channel 7 officers found locked doors in the house.

“When those doors have been opened, they’ve actually found children in some of the rooms,” he said.

A police spokesperson also said they had problems contacting parents of other children at the centre due to language problems and there being no records for next of kin.

It is not known if the operation is licensed.

Child Safety Services is also investigating.

Several people have been let into the house today and remain inside.

However, three officials from the Department of Education and Training got no answer when ringing the intercom system on the front gate this morning and subsequently left the premises.

‘You never see or hear anything’

The house is old and unkempt, with broken toys in the backyard.

Neighbours have spoken of frantic scenes yesterday, because the house was locked off with an electronic gate and authorities could not get inside.
Police had to scramble over the fence and unlock it from the inside so ambulance officers could get inside.

Police said there they found six children locked in rooms in the house.

Neighbour Jayden Jones said it was very quiet at the house every day, despite the fact he had seen seven children there.

“They get dropped off every day – you never hear or see anything and … it was odd because they’re kids, and they’re meant to be outside running around, but I never heard a thing or saw anything,” he said.

“Never heard yelling – normal kid things you normally hear having fun – I didn’t hear any of it.

“Last year when the big storm came, everything got repaired in the street except that house … they never did anything.”
