Several houses have lost their roofs at Fernvale, west of Brisbane, as dangerous thunderstorms moved across Queensland’s south-east.

The State Emergency Service has received 26 requests for assistance in Fernvale, with several powerlines down in the town.

Hail was reported at Ipswich and further west at Marburg.

At 7:00pm, 2051 properties in Moreton Bay were without power, a further 1797 were blacked out in the Somerset council area, and 180 homes were affected across the Sunshine Coast.

The storms, bringing hail and strong winds, moved across Ipswich and impacted northern parts of Brisbane before continuing northwards.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said at 5:05pm “very dangerous” thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Dayboro, north-west of Brisbane.

By 7:15pm, the storm cell had moved off the coast around Noosa on the Sunshine Coast.

A separate severe storm warning was issued just after 7:00pm for Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley council areas.

A broader warning remains in place for the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego districts.

Earlier, senior forecaster Rick Threlfall said it was possible that hail measuring up to eight centimetres could have fallen in the heaviest region of the storm cell.

“The main issue with that is that it’s got some very large hailstones in there – greater than five centimetres – so hail very much a problem with that storm,” he said.

“But also destructive winds and a period of very heavy rainfall as well.”
