‘Fantastic discovery’: boy found alive

A Victorian boy missing for four days was found alive only 2.25 kilometres from where he was last seen.

Eleven-year-old Luke Shambrook, who is autistic, had been missing since Good Friday morning, when he wandered off from family members near Lake Eildon, in Victoria’s north-east.

Police say Luke was found around 11.55am AEST off Skyline Road in Eildon, less than 3km from where he went missing.

A police helicopter found him in dense bush after a search involving up to 60 volunteers that included looking beneath the surface of Lake Eildon.

Acting Commander Rick Nugent said Luke was suffering dehydration and hypothermia, and had not yet been fully assessed.

“He’s a lucky boy, he’s a strong boy and we’re so wrapped for the family,” he said.

He said he was not sure how far Luke walked during the four days he was missing.

Paramedics treated Luke for exhaustion, dehydration and hyperthermia at the scene and he will be flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital for medical treatment.

According to Channel Seven reporter Michael Scanlon, Luke was conscious and looking around at the rescue scene.

The search and rescue included the dog squad, mounted branch, air wing, police motorcycles and 4WDs.

Victoria Police broke the news on their Twitter account, calling the finding “fantastic”.
