Tony Abbott’s chief of staff has been accused of being too controlling. So it’s no surprising that rumours have arisen, suggesting she could soon go it alone and run for a seat in Parliament.

According to a Fairfax media report, Ms Credlin is refusing to rule out the possibility.

Responding to questions, a spokesperson for Ms Credlin reportedly said, “Peta Credlin has no intention of running for Parliament at this time – state or federal, House or Senate”.

“At this time” is typically a telling phrase allowing individuals to keep their options open.

Ms Credlin wouldn’t be the first chief of staff to make the switch.

In 2006, the now Assistant Treasurer Arthur Sinodinos left his role as John Howard’s advisor after nine years to join the private sector, before becoming a senator in 2011.

Mr Sinodinos has temporarily stepped aside as Assistant Treasurer pending the outcome of an investigation regarding corruption at Australian Water Holdings Pty Ltd.
