Will your home get faster internet? Find out

An extra 1.9 million homes and businesses will be plugged into the national broadband network in the next 18 months, the NBN Co forecasted on Monday.

Lucky residents in 400 cities, suburbs and towns will get higher speed internet by June 2016 as part of the next phase of the rollout, if all goes to plan.

A further six million premises will have to wait until 2020 at the latest to access NBN speeds between 12 megabytes and 100 megabytes per second, up from the current average of 4.7 megabytes per second.

NBN Co spokesperson Trent Williams acknowledged that, “naturally”, those not included in the next build phase would be “disappointed”.

“But ultimately no one misses out as the NBN will be made available to every Australian family and business by 2020,” Mr Williams told The New Daily.

In the past year to June, the number of premises with access to the NBN more than doubled to 553,000, up from 227,000 in the previous financial year, while the number of active users tripled, up from 70,000 a year ago to 210,000.

A little over 300,000 Australians are active NBN users, Mr Williams said.

Rather than connecting most homes directly to the network, the Coalition has opted for a supposedly faster and cheaper “multi-technology” option that includes wireless and existing pay-TV cables.

Some of these non-direct options are slower, but the NBN Co maintains that even the slowest speeds of 12 megabytes per second will be more than sufficient to boost business, study and entertainment options.

“Access to fast broadband can provide a range of benefits for homes and businesses such as improved opportunities to work from home, better access to online education tools and more options for on-demand entertainment,” Mr Williams said.

New South Wales residents would benefit the most from the rollout, with 659,000 premises flagged for connection, with Queensland (379,000), Victoria (286,000) and Western Australia (240,000) the runners up.
