Troubled airline Qantas continues to shed its share of international passengers with the amount of people using the airline more than halving since 2000.

A new federal government report into international airline activity shows the national carrier is now under siege from overseas Asian competitors like Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

In 2014, Qantas was responsible for 16.3 per cent of international travel in Australia, compared to 18 per cent in 2012 and 34 per cent in 2000.

The 2013-14 International Airline Activity report shows budget airlines are increasingly popular with Australian travellers, with Jetstar and Air Asia both commanding over 10 per cent of the Australian international market.

Emirates appears to have the fastest growing market share, more than doubling their share from 4.2 per cent in 2004 to 9.5 per cent in 2014.
