Olympic champ Newbery guilty on drugs charge

Olympic gold medallist Chantelle Newbery has been sentenced for drug offences for the second time in three months.

The 37-year-old champion diver pleaded guilty in the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Wednesday to two counts of possessing a dangerous drug and one count of failing to properly dispose of a needle or syringe.

She received 18 months’ probation.

Newbery appeared in the same court in July for similar offences relating to possession of methylamphetamine.

She was placed on a drug diversion program on that occasion.

Newbery won Australia’s first Olympic diving gold medal since 1924 in the women’s 10m platform in Athens in 2004.

Her victory was Australia’s first women’s Olympic diving title.
