With the jury still deliberating over the fate of accused murderer Erin Patterson, the ABC has reportedly already commissioned a dramatisation of the extraordinary mushroom poisoning case.
Tony Ayres Productions announced Friday that the show, dubbed Toxic, will be told in multiple timelines and from multiple perspectives.
“Toxic is a layered and intricate series that explores the events and characters of this true-life story without judgement. It is a riveting thriller about marriage, faith and motherhood,” the company said.
The drama will be created by Elise McCredie (Jack Irish) and Tony Ayres (The Survivors), working closely with ABC journalist and podcaster Rachael Brown.
A jury in the regional Victorian town of Morwell has deliberated for four days – after hearing two-month’s worth of evidence – as it decides whether Patterson, 50, intentionally served her lunch guests beef Wellingtons laced with death cap mushrooms.
Her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister Heather, all died after consuming the lunch at Patterson’s home on July 29, 2023.
Heather’s husband Ian Wilkinson also ate the meal but survived after spending months in hospital.
Patterson claims it was all an accident and has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one charge of attempted murder.
McCredie described the Patterson case as a tangled, heart-breaking story.
“Sitting in on the trial, watching evidence unfurl, change direction, and reposition itself has been an exercise in the subjectivity of ‘truth’ and a blueprint for a dramatic retelling that explores multiple perspectives in an honest and compelling way,” she said.
Ayres said true stories asked storytellers to probe the complexities of human behaviour and examine “what really lies beneath the headlines”.
“It’s both a challenge and a responsibility to go beyond the surface – to reveal, not just sensationalise,” he said.
Casting for Toxic is yet to be finalised and a air-date is still to be determined.
