Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki’s Emmy Award win has left her “in a real pickle”.

The 34-year-old picked up the outstanding supporting actress in a drama series award on Sunday (US time) for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown, but admitted she had been too “superstitious” to prepare a speech beforehand.

However, as she took to the stage at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre after her name was called ahead of fellow nominees, she offered a string of thank yous to the people she had worked with on Netflix’s regal drama and hailed her role a “gift”.

“Wow. I didn’t write anything down because I’m very superstitious and now I’m in a real pickle so I’m going to do this very quickly,” Debicki said.

“Peter [Morgan, series writer and producer] thank you. Thank you for making this show and thank you for trusting me with this.

“To our producers, thank you for working so hard. Deb Ormrod, my hair and make-up, amazing woman who transformed me every day, Kate and Emily who created the hair and make-up, costume designers, I love you.

“Our cast are so beautiful, it was such a gift to work with you. Gosh. Playing this part based on this unparalleled incredible human being has been my great privilege, it has been a gift. Thank you so much.”

Debicki collected Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Awards for the role earlier this year, but it was her first Emmy.

Hits and misses for The Bear

Historical epic Shogun won the prestigious best drama award, while Hacks upset favourite The Bear to win best comedy.

Shogun, a sweeping story about political machinations in 17th-century Japan, also won acting awards for Japanese stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

Hacks, about a 70-something comedian and a millennial writer, was the surprise winner of best comedy series, which awards pundits had thought was close to a lock for the second season of restaurant tale The Bear.

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, a chilling story about a bartender stalked by a customer, was named best limited series.

The Bear won three of the four Emmys for comedy acting, yielding only to Jean Smart who claimed her third trophy for her starring role as an ambitious stand-up comic on Hacks.

Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won their second consecutive Emmys for comedy actor and supporting actor on The Bear. White plays Chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a man trying to turn his family’s Chicago sandwich shop into a fine dining establishment.

“This show has changed my life and instilled a faith that change is possible,” White said as he held his award on stage.

Moss-Bachrach earned his trophy for his role as Cousin Richie, a restaurant manager and father.

Both actors won the same awards at the last Emmys, held in January after Hollywood labour strikes disrupted the normal schedule.

In a surprise, Liza Colón-Zayas landed a third Emmy for The Bear. She was named best supporting comedy actress for her role as chef Tina Marrero, winning in a field that included legends Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett.

Smart received a standing ovation when she won her third Emmy as the septuagenarian comedian Deborah Vance on Hacks.

“I appreciate this because I just don’t get enough attention,” Smart joked on stage.

Schitt’s Creek stars Eugene and Dan Levy shared hosting duties, the first father-and-son duo to do so.

“If things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short,” Eugene Levy deadpanned, referring to the Only Murders In The Building star who was in the audience.

Dan Levy joked that the Emmys were known as “broadcast TV’s biggest night for honouring movie stars on streaming services”.

Billy Crudup, a conniving media executive on The Morning Show (known as Morning Wars in Australia) claimed his second Emmy for supporting drama actor. He motioned to his “piece of eye candy there, my wife” – fellow nominee Naomi Watts – as he held his trophy.

Winners were chosen by the nearly 22,000 performers, directors, producers and other members of Hollywood’s Television Academy.
