Actor Alec Baldwin’s infamous Saturday Night Live impression of Donald Trump has tricked a national newspaper into thinking he was the US President.

El Nacional in the Dominican Republic published a photo of Baldwin, captioned as the president, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This picture accompanied an article on Israeli settlements.

El Nacional apologised to readers and “anyone affected” and said no one at the newspaper spotted the mistake.

And despite the actor’s impersonation sufficiently convincing the Dominican newspaper, Mr Trump has been less than impressed, scolding Baldwin and saying the frequent Saturday Night Live impersonations of him “stink”.

“@NBCNews is bad but Saturday Night Live is the worst of NBC. Not funny, cast is terrible, always a complete hit job. Really bad television!” he wrote last month.

The NBC show brought back Baldwin to host SNL for a record 17th time on Saturday – and another anticipated rendition as the leader of the free world.

The sketch is based around the President having his day in “The People’s Court” over his blocked travel ban.

The sketch had Baldwin’s Trump taking on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals judges, who declined to reinstate the travel ban.

It begins with the fake Trump pleading his case, saying that he signed, but didn’t read, the “tremendous” travel ban and that he wanted it reinstated.

“People took pictures of me holding up the paper, very official,” Baldwin’s Trump said.

He later brings out a character witness to vouch for him – a bare-chested Russian President Vladimir Putin, introduced as Mr Trump’s “long-time crush”.

“Hey everybody, c’mon, lay off President Trump, this man is a great friend,” Beck Bennett’s Putin said.

“He’s my little American Happy Meal.”
