Henderson will reportedly a new surgeon at the hospital, although the name of his character is yet to be released.
The ABC show is returning for its 12th season, entering uncharted territory without Dempsey’s character Derek as its charismatic lead.
Forty-year-old Henderson shares the same tousled brown hair and blue eyes as Dempsey and has worked with Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes before in 2011’s Off The Map and 2009’s Inside The Box.
You may also recognise Henderson from the 2014 Aussie series Secrets & Lies on Network Ten in which he played Ben Gundelach.
Dempsey’s last episode of Grey’s Anatomy, in which his character was killed off in a car crash, was in April this year.
He was not the first actor to leave the series, joining fellow deserters Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, Isaiah Washington and Sandra Oh.
