*WARNING: MINOR SEASON FIVE SPOILERS AHEAD*
Game of Thrones has had some pretty impressive battle scenes in its time.
Tonight’s episode, titled Hardhome, could eclipse them all.
• The surprising Pitch Perfect cameo in Game of Thrones
• Game of Thrones recap: season five, episode seven
The latest instalment of the HBO series sees beloved character Jon Snow (Kit Harington) journey into Wildling territory alongside Widling raider Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju).
The unlikely allies are hoping to convince the Wildling army to join with the men of the Night’s Watch in an effort to combat the threat of White Walkers.
Without revealing any specific details, episode eight will feature a spectacular sequence to rival last season’s Battle of Castle Black.
And that’s saying something, given the Battle of Castle Black featured giants and mammoths.
A screen capture from the preview for ‘Hardhome’.
“It was three to four weeks of shooting for a sequence that should add up to [more than] 20 minutes,” Harington told Entertainment Weekly.
“We shot less than a minute a day! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done on Thrones. I think it’s going to be spectacular.”
Harington, who spends most of his time filming bleak, violent scenes in freezing temperatures, said this scene was the hardest one to film yet.
“I think [HBO] has realized that to keep people engaged with this show, the big set pieces each year have to be bigger than the ones before,” he told the magazine.
“Episode nine [The Battle of Castle Black] last year was the hardest thing I’ve done. This was twice as hard as that. It was exhausting.”
Tonght’s episode will provide a further glimpse behind the scenes of the ferocious Wildling tribes, as well as a few new faces.
Most notably, Pitch Perfect 2 star Birgitte Hjort Sørensen will star as Widling chieftain Karsi.
