Style wrap: Rihanna gets ridiculed, the turtleneck returns

Celebrity style this week was dominated by one little, low-key event in New York: the Met Ball (sarcasm intended).

A fundraising Gala of epic proportions, the glamorous event attracts the entire fashion industry. Read: every celebrity, model, designer and famous person you’ve ever Googled.

The sheer volume of expensive clothing and famous clothes horses raises the caliber of the red carpet stakes to almost the point of absurdity.

• Style wrap: trends, triumphs and scandals
• Style wrap: who wore what, and did they nail it?

Rihanna’s dress, in particular, encouraged some fairly creative responses online.

Created over two years by esteemed Chinese designer Guo Pei, it was quickly reduced to the subject of internet memes.

The best Rihanna dress memes

First came the Big Big comparisons …

Then the most accurate omelette jokes:

Then this brilliant mash-up of Sarah Jessica Parker’s bizarre headers and RiRi’s dress:

And more.

The best of the rest

Rihanna wasn’t the only celebrity to become the target of keyboard warriors, with several other stars getting the meme treatment.

Like Anne Hathaway’s Princess Leia-esque get-up:

Or Beyonce and Jay-Z’s throwback to the 1988 Eddie Murphy film Coming to America…

Brilliant.

In other news: Bradley Cooper is a beautiful sketch

Bradley Cooper may be one of Hollywood’s most rugged heartthrobs, but he also makes a pretty delicate, stunning cartoon.

Confused? We were too.

The American Sniper star was the lucky recipient of a caricature from famed New York eatery Sardi’s and the finished product was accurate, but also completely inaccurate.

Somehow, the sketch is both Bradley Cooper and Barbara Streisand all at once.

Look at those lashes.

Stunning.

Best dressed: the cast of ‘Mad Max’ coordinate

Ever heard of the “cheerleader effect”? It’s the wildly sexist termed coined by How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney Stinson and used to describe the phenomenon whereby women in groups look more attractive.

Whilst this should be phased out in regular life, it can still apply to fashion.

Each of the outfits worn by the young cast of Mad Max: Fury Road are pretty terrible on their own, but their combined effect is one of impact and modern elegance.

The cast that dresses together stays together – for a sequel at least.

Royal baby chic

Did you see photos of Princess Charlotte and think, “darn, that’s a well dressed baby”?

You’re not alone.

The newborn’s bonnet and booties combo captured the hearts of mothers-to-be everywhere and prompted many to question where they can get their own.

Apparently, Charlotte’s get-up was given to her by her nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo.

According to Us Weeklythe newborn’s Spanish nanny sourced the outfit from the coastal city of San Sebastian.

Baby Charlotte was also draped in a blanket from British brand G.H. Hurt & Son Ltd. You can shop their affordable baby blanket collection here.

Trend report: the turtleneck makes a comeback

That firm bastion of weather-appropriate dressing has returned, with celebrities and designers embracing the high neck in a variety of incarnations.

Once the domain of Steve Jobs, the turtleneck can now be spotted on the red carpet and the runway.

Layer your turtleneck with structured blazers, leather jackets or even other turtlenecks.

If you want to be a bit edgy, opt for a sleeveless version a la Kate Hudson.
