It was the older actresses – well, at least those over 30 – who stole the fashion show at the Golden Globe ceremony in Los Angeles on Monday.

Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson and Amal Clooney were all among the best dressed guests to attend the first major awards ceremony of 2015.

Here’s our top 10 best dressed and our three worst.

10. Allison Williams

Sporting an identical style to the petit Selma Hayek, who was also acclaimed for her Globes style, GIRLS star Williams, 26, was a knockout in head-to-toe red, tiered sparkles from Italian house Armani. Special mention must also be made to her stunning hair look – a pure Hollywood side sweep that perfected her ensemble. While she wasn’t nominated this year, she lit up the internet after the awards for much more controversial reasons.

Teaming lilac ombre with a petaled bodice may seem like an odd match but Nyong’o, 31, who was a presenter, was breathtaking in her Giambattista Valli strapless gown.

8. Lorde

The 18-year-old singer was a best original song nominee for her Hunger Games Mockingjay – Part 1 hit ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’. While she lost out to John Legend for the gong, she brought the pant suit to life for a whole new generation with her combination of tailored tuxedo, cute crop top, killer silver neck piece and a slash of red lipstick. Fierce.

7. Amal Clooney

The new darling of the fashion world Amal Clooney, 36, almost stole the show in Hollywood with her debut awards appearance with her husband, George Clooney. Amal’s statuesque black Dior gown was a throwback to old stars like Audrey Hepburn, complete with long white gloves – a rarity on the modern red carpet.

6. Naomi Watts

Watts, 46, teamed her striking canary yellow Gucci gown with a to-die-for Bulgari serpent necklace that was, without a doubt, the accoutrement of the night – and the third time in a year the Australian actress has worn it!

5. Reese Witherspoon

It wasn’t just that Witherspoon, 38, swapped her usual sweet style for full metal glamour in her Calvin Klein figure-hugging frock, her entire look, including stunning blonde locks, was super sexy and super cool.

4. Emma Stone

Nominee Stone’s cropped Lanvin pantsuit was funked up by a beaded bodice and a giant bow that gave her tiny frame some oomph. Kudos must be given for any guest who thumbs their nose at tradition, but, like Lorde, Stone, 26, nails her look. It’s also great to see her hair return to red.

3. Kate Hudson

There didn’t appear to be any feasible reason for Hudson, 35, to have attended the Golden Globes but we’re sure glad she showed up. The actress took out the most daring look of the night in plunging white Versace.

2. Julianne Moore

Designer: Givenchy Haute Couture

Best actress winner for her dramatic Still Alice performance, Moore, 54, was spectacular in a balayage effect silver and black Givenchy Haute Couture gown, with inky feathered train. We saluted her style, but we loved her even more for her speech championing the invasion of great roles for middle-aged women in Hollywood.

Kruger, 38, who attended the Globes in support of her partner Joshua Jackson’s show The Affair, always gets her fashion infinitesimally right. Her silver form-fitted gown from British designer Wickstead was no exception.

Homeland star Danes’ Valentino gown was too gypsy and too big, as were her earrings. This just feels like her stylist was trying too hard to make the actress’s bohemian side shine through.

There are just no excuses for this mumsy Chanel number, complete with butterfly motif, frilled Elizabethan collar and Victorian hem, even if you are expecting your first child.
