Referendum date locked in

This week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the date of Australia’s first referendum in 24 years.

Australians will decide on October 14 whether to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution with a Voice to Parliament.

South African tragedy

More than 70 people died after a fire in a five-storey apartment building in Johannesburg.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for support to survivors and those affected, and hoped investigations into the fire would prevent another tragedy.

Idalia’s legacy

Ex-hurricane Idalia ripped through Florida this week, leaving a trail of destruction. Millions of residents evacuated or took cover when Idalia made landfall in Florida.

US Senator Mitch McConnell once again appeared to freeze when taking questions from the media this week.

The 81-year-old, who is the longest-serving Senate party leader in history, reportedly felt light-headed. The incident comes just week after he froze during a media briefing in Washington.

Coach’s classy tribute

Sarina Wiegman, the woman who took the Lionesses to the final in the FIFA Women’s World Cup has been crowned UEFA’s Women’s Coach of the Year.

Super blue moon

There was a super moon this week, which is a full moon that is closer to Earth. The event resulted in some stunning footage being captured around Sydney.

The moon also happened to be the second full moon in August, making it a blue moon.

A man was busted for driving a bull, called Howdy Doody, in Nebraska. Police pulled the man over and issued a warning.

A furry car with cat ears, whiskers and a tail was on show this week. A Swedish flag is seen hanging from the car’s tail and it was a hit on social media, with people wanting to get one for themselves.

Sticky situation

A good samaritan helped a bear cub last week that had its head in a container. The bear was eventually freed, but the woman who found the cub said its mother was nowhere to be seen.
