Alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction has issued a public apology after an onstage scuffle between members prompted its show in Boston to be abandoned.

The band, which rose to fame in the 1990s and is in the middle of a reunion tour, also cancelled its scheduled show in Bridgeport, Connecticut, that was meant to go ahead on Monday (AEST).

Lead singer Perry Farrell was performing when he appeared to become angry at guitarist Dave Navarro during the show on Saturday.

Reportedly upset about the stage volume his bandmates were playing at during recent concerts, Farrell shoved and then punched Navarro. He was then restrained and dragged offstage by crew and bassist Eric Avery.

“We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night,” Jane’s Addiction posted in a brief Instagram stories statement.

“As a result we will be cancelling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport.”

The band’s next show is scheduled for Toronto on September 18.

Video footage being shared widely online showed Lollapalooza founder Farrell, 65, elbowing Navarro, shouting at him and punching him, before he was restrained by a crew member at the Leader Bank Pavilion on Saturday.

The crew member was then assisted by several others, including Avery, who held down Farrell as 57-year-old Navarro, also a host of the tattoo reality series Ink Master, unplugged the equipment.

Farrell was then taken off stage and the rest of the other members came back on to clap for the audience and make the peace sign.

Farrell’s wife Etty Lou Farrell said her husband had suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat due to the band’s high stage volume.

In an Instagram post she said fans in the front row were heckling Farrell during the Boston show, saying they couldn’t hear him.

Etty said the final straw came when the band launched into the song Ocean Size before he was ready.

“By the end of the song, he wasn’t singing, he was screaming just to be heard,” she said.

The band, which reunited after more than a decade for a tour, has a series of shows planned in the US and Canada in September and October.

The band is known for the songs Strays and The Great Escape Artist and has released four albums – Nothing’s Shocking (1988), Ritual De Lo Habitual (1990), Strays (2003) and The Great Escape Artist (2011).

In 2013, they were honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
