Australian singer Jessica Mauboy has unveiled the song she will perform while presenting the nation at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal, but fans have already identified issues with its title.

The Indigenous songstress will perform ‘#We Got Love’, written by songwriters David Musumeci and Anthony Egizii, at the May 9 – 13 international event, which Australia has been a part of since 2015.

Musumeci and Egizii said the pop anthem is “a reminder that love, acceptance and the power of inclusivity can overcome all obstacles or hardships that arise” and has been well-received, with social media users praising it as “catchy” and “perfect for Eurovision”.

The accompanying film clip features the 28-year-old standing inside a cube made of fluorescent lights and rolling around in a pool of water while singing about feeling “powerless to change things”.

“I won’t throw my hands up to surrender, because love is stronger than fire. So don’t give up, because we got love,” Mauboy sings.

While most of the comments on the YouTube clip are positive – “Welcome to my top 10 Australia,” wrote one Greek viewer – the clip has received 1000 dislikes on the video platform.

Some of this may have to do with its problematic title, which fans have pointed out makes incorrect use of a hashtag – a social media function that allows people to group together messages on a certain topic.

Technically, all words following a hashtag should be grouped together. The formatting of ‘#We Got Love’ means the word ‘we’ is the only word associated with the hashtag.

“Let’s get ‘#We’ trending,” YouTube user Spike Mars joked.

“I’m not sure what bothers me more, the drawn out way that Australia is teasing us with their entry, or that in all their promotional graphics, there are spaces in what should be a hashtag,” one Eurovision fan tweeted.

Mauboy, who was runner-up on the 2006 season of Australian Idol, said she had always dreamed of appearing at Eurovision, “since I was a little girl watching it with the family in Darwin”.

This will be Australia’s fourth time competing in the beloved song competition. Our 2015 debut, which saw Idol alum Guy Sebastian take the stage, was initially intended to be a one-off but was such a success it was confirmed would be a regular fixture.

Sebastian placed fifth with his song ‘Tonight Again’ and a year later Dami Im secured Australia’s best-ever result by placing second with her track ‘Sound of Silence’.

Last year’s performer, teenager Isaiah Firebrace, placed ninth with his ballad ‘Don’t Come Easy’.

Mauboy is more than equipped to handle the pressure of the big night, having been a guest performer at the 2014 event.

While an estimated 200 million people or more tune into the broadcast each year, Mauboy has had her fair share of intimidating audiences, having performed for Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama and collaborated with major stars like Snoop Dogg and Flo Rida.
